A
few words about our founder Dr. Vernon L. Walton. Dr.
Walton was born in Wynne Arkansas and raised in Joliet
Illinois. He attended college in Oklahoma at “Langston
University”. After graduating college he attended
medical school at the “University of Illinois”. After
graduating medical school in 1957, Dr. Walton went into
internship at “Cook County Hospital” in Chicago. He then
spent 2 years in the Navy before going on into his
Pediatric residency in Oakland California. After
residency he moved his family to Sacramento where he
opened up his Pediatric medical practice in the 1960’s.
Dr. Vernon Walton was the first African American
Pediatrician in Sacramento. His mission was clear and
that was to provide the best health care to underserved
kids in the community. During his career he served on
many boards as well as Chief of Pediatrics for Sutter
and Mercy hospitals in Sacramento. Dr. Walton retired in
2010. He was recently awarded Senator Richard Pan’s
“Unsung hero” award. Dr. Walton loved children and
touched the lives of many families over his forty plus
year career. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to
fish. Dr. Walton was very active in his church and
community.
He leaves us his legacy and mission, that all children
regardless of race or socioeconomic status deserve the
very best health care.
